An eight-month-old baby girl was raped on Sunday, by her cousin who is currently under arrest, BBC reported.
The infant was transferred to a hospital, and police say she is in a critical condition.

Swati Maliwal, Chief of Delhi Commission for Women, said her injuries are “horrific,” and tweeted that the baby had undergone a three-hour operation.

"Her heart-rending cries could be heard in the intensive-care unit of the hospital. She has horrific injuries in her internal organs,"she said.

Furthermore, governmental statistics revealed that such crimes are not uncommon.

Two years ago, another incident took place in India where an 11-month-old was reportedly kidnapped and raped by a neighbour.

Delhi, according to the BBC, is home to the largest number of sexually abused children in the world.

Fifty-three percent of children in India have been subjected to sexual abuse in their lives, according to a 2007 study conducted by India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development.

According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau data, child rape cases in 2016 witnessed an increase by 82% compared to 2015.
