The U.S. condemned on Friday the arrests made by Iranian security forces after thousands of Iranians took to the streets in anti-government protests.

US President Donald Trump, tweeted that the protests were peaceful and that Iranians are fed up with the regime’s corruption.

"Iranian govt should respect their people's rights, including right to express themselves," he wrote.

The U.S also urged all nations to support Iranian people.

"All nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption," the US State Department said in a statement according to Iranian Asharq Al-Awsat.

Eshaq Jahangiri, Iran's first vice president, cast doubt on whether the protests were solely motivated by economic issues.
