The Minister of Transportation, Jameel Mujahid, said on Tuesday that ride-hailing apps are complementary to yellow taxis rather than rivals.

Mujahid told Petra News Agency, that the cabinet’s decision to license ride-hailing apps came to organize the activity of transportation to serve all parties.

He added that the regulation requires companies or drivers to obtain the necessary licenses and permits from the Land Transport Regulatory Commission (LTRC) which guarantees justice and fair competition along with citizens’ safety.

Mujahid pointed out that the commission will provide taxis in the areas that are not covered by ride-hailing apps availability.

The goal is to take advantage of the taxis that are already licensed rather than increasing the number of cars on the roads.

Ride-hailing apps have been a controversial topic in Jordan, with yellow taxi drivers regularly protesting against them.
