While the world is celebrating World Children Day, Jordan is trying to be a model country in protecting and promoting the rights of children in the region.

World Children Day is an annual day celebrated worldwide, to promote children rights, calling the world’s children to raise their voices in solidarity with the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children around the world.

Jordan has around 2.9 million children under 18 years of age from a total population of 7.5 million people.

One of the most significant achievements for Jordan is that Infant mortality rates have halved since 1990 and maternal mortality rates have also declined dramatically to 19/100,000 births.

Also the number of children attending primary school has climbed to 98%, and more girls than boys are now attending primary and secondary schools, and heading to university.

However, Jordan is facing several challenges and violations registered against children.

The number of domestic violence cases in Jordan had reached 2304 cases in the first nine months of 2017, with expectations that the number might rise to 3072 by the end of the year, according to the Jordanian Ministry of Development spokesman.

The total number of cases where children were abused by their families totaled 2829 in the period between 2014-2016, and they were handled by Family Protection Department, a branch of the Public Service Directorate.

UNICEF Jordan celebrates the day

UNICEF announced that this year’s theme will be “Children Take Over”, encouraging children to take over the most significant roles in their country, “to shine a light on the most pressing challenges faced by their generation.”

“This is a day for children, by children, all over the world to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential,” the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says.

UNICEF Jordan involved Jordanian children to celebrate the international day, helping them to take over leadership roles in the country.

Many children celebrated the day and took over significant leadership roles in the country, including Prime Ministry of Jordan, Ministry of Education, British Embassy in Amman, Royal Jordanian, Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Social Development, and many others.
