Jordan's unemployment rate has reached 18% for the second quarter of the current year, with a 2.7% percent points increase compared with the second quarter last year, and women have been the most affected.

The results also show that male unemployed percentage was 13.4% against 33.9% for females.
The unemployment rate has dropped for males by 0.5 percentage points and increased for females by 0.9 percentage points for the second quarter of 2017 compared with the first quarter of the same year.

A 2014 World Bank report cited patriarchal mindsets and general unemployment issues as reasons behind the gender imbalance in the unemployment rate:

“Married women are considerably less likely to participate in the labor force. Young and educated women, ready to join the labor force, face high levels of unemployment. Gender-related bias in the economic structure of employment adversely affects women’s economic participation,” it stated.

The survey was done by the Department of Statistics and included a total sample size of about 16,000 households distributed all over the governorates of the Kingdom.
