Citizens from across Spain gathered to vote for the independence of Catalonia despite the government’s opposition of the referendum on Sunday.

Catalans defied the authorities by actively engaging in the voting process, as fears of civil disruption threaten the stability of the eastern region.

Separatists positioned themselves at various polling stations in Barcelona, while police forces were deployed to control riots and prevent voters from entering the designated buildings.

This comes after President Carles Puigdemont called for the recognition of the republic’s autonomy, based on its notable contributions towards Spain’s history and economy. Catalonia holds 16% of the country’s entire population and 71% favour its independence.
