The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Finance has begun imposing a sales tax on certain goods sold in the country.

This move is the first of its kind in the Gulf country, and will include a 50% tax on fizzy drinks, and a 100% tax on tobacco products and energy drinks.

A senior official in the MoF said in a press conference in Dubai that he considers the move to be a "new achievement on our path to realise the wise vision of our leaders in creating the future".

The country is known for not imposing an income tax.
