Seven people were killed while two were injured after a shootout in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday.
According to Al Jazeera, two conscripts and five others were killed after a suicide bomber attempted to “storm” a checkpoint outside the town of Rafah, near Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack
The incident came two days after ISIS carried out an attack in Rafah which claimed 18 lives.
Al Jazeera's Middle East analyst Yehia Ghanem said the intensified violence in Sinai over the last four years has been used by the Egyptian government to escalate repression throughout the country.
Sinai peninsula is the only part of Egyptian territory located in Asia. It borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.
