Jordanians are spending more money on travel this year, with statistics from the first half of this year showing a 12.3% increase to almost JD500 million ($705 million) compared to the same period last year. This is according to the Central Bank of Jordan.

In the Bank’s report, costs of travel for education, tourism, health, and other purposes are included.

If we look at it monthly, Jordanians spent about JD100 million in June, 36.5% more than they did in June of last year.

To give some context, there are currently five airlines operating out of Jordan, including Royal Jordanian (who have become known with their unconventional, if often problematic, advertising methods), Royal Wings, and Petra.

The government has proposed bringing back the 16% tax on travel for tourists. The current tax, among other fees, amounts to about JD40, and is named the “Special Tax for Air Travel”. This is applicable when leaving any of Jordan’s (five-ish) airports, and revenue from this tax is shared by the government and the Airport International Group (AIG) which operates out of the Queen Alia International Airport.
