According to al-Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said that delegations from Iran and Saudi Arabia are planning to exchange diplomatic visits, likely after Hajj pilgrimage this year.

In an interview with the Iranian Students' News Agency, Zarif said that the visits would take place in Saudi Arabia, and visas have been issued for officials going on the diplomatic trip.

"We are waiting for the final steps to be completed so diplomats from the two countries can inspect their embassies and consulates," he added.

Relations between the two countries have been difficult in recent years, particularly with blaming each other on political crises with supporting opposing sides in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

The two countries severed diplomatic ties last year, after a series of incidents including Saudi's execution of a prominent Shia cleric, and attacks on Iranian parliament.

Thousands of Iranian pilgrims will be making their journey to Mecca for Hajj this year, indicating that restoring diplomatic ties is necessary at this crucial time.
