Jordanian MP Tamer Beno has demanded that the government provides him with statistics showing the number of deaths caused by drowning in Aqaba since 2001.
Beno also demanded answers for whether the government has hired lifeguards or established any means of protection for those visiting Aqaba’s beaches.
Social media activists held Aqaba authorities responsible for the drownings.
The fact that there are no lifeguards on watch at the moment, or any nearby emergency centers, has sharply increased the number of deaths, according to activists.
Meanwhile, Aqaba’s citizens questioned the reasons behind the government’s delay in hiring new lifeguards for the past two years.
