The Jerusalem Municipality has approved Thursday plans to build 800 settler units in East Jerusalem, Palestinian news outlet Wafa reports.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said that, “building in jerusalem is important, and it will continue in order to allow a larger number of young people to live in Jerusalem to build their future and to strengthen the ‘capital of Israel’.”

Late last year, during the last legs of US President Obama’s term, the United States abstained on a Security Council resolution that declared that Israeli settlements are illegal, and that constructing them is a violation of international law.

According to the Municipality, plans of establishing more settlement units in Jerusalem were frozen during Obama’s term, and have been gradually pushed to approval after President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
