Fifty five years ago today, Algeria declared its independence from France.

On Wednesday, his Majesty King Abdullah II congratulated Algeria on its day of independence.

In a telegram to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Jordanian monarch wished his counterpart long health and wellbeing, while wishing the Algerian people longlasting progress and prosperity.

French President Charles De Gaulle pronounced Algeria an independent country on July 5, 1962.

Between 350,000 and one million Algerians are estimated to have died in the bloody eight-year-long war with France.
