The presidents of governorate councils will be paid JD1,000 per month under the new decentralisation law, as a monthly stipend rather than a salary, the Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, Musa Al Maaytah, said on Thursday.

Maaytah added that elected council members will not be paid salaries, but will instead receive a monthly stipend, of JD1,000 for the heads of councils and JD500 for other members.

The ministry recently held two training sessions for staff of the national call centre which will deal with the public's enquiries about the upcoming local and municipal elections, the minister said, adding that staff will be available to respond to the public's questions about relevant rules and regulations.

For his part, the spokesperson for the Independent Election Commission, Jihad Momani, said that a financial clearance is required from the relevant municipality or from the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) for those who want to run as candidates in the elections.

However, this clearance is not required for the governorate council (decentralisation) elections, he said.

Momani urged all potential municipal candidates to obtain the financial clearance, noting that the candidate nominations and application will run for three days next week.
