Breaking reports have been released of a van hitting pedestrians outside Finsbury Park Mosque, London.

Several pedestrians have been injured after being hit by a van in London, with CNN, Sky and BBC reports citing 'a number of casualties' at the scene.

A spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police said that officers were called at 12.20am, according to the Independent.

Police did not initially confirm claims circulating on social media that the target of the van attack were Muslims leaving the mosque after Taraweeh prayers performed for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.  Social media users speculated that this was the case before news agencies ran reports supporting the Muslims-milling- around-after-prayers conclusion.

Finsbury Park mosque had at one time become notorious for attracting extremism and suspected terror links, and certain imams like Abu Hamza al-Masri's names had come to be synonymous with the mosque. The Muslim community of London have been trying to rehabilate the image of this 'contraversial' place of worship in more recent times.  Located in north London, this mosque is also one of the most prominent in the capital, drawing crowds of Muslim worshippers at peak times in Ramadan.
